Forest Trails & Tails

The exotic butter discovery from India goes back to nearly 45 years, where local businessmen discovered the "Golden Road". This was in the Eastern patch of India, in the dense forests of Chhattisgarh, Odisha & small parts of Jharkhand.

The sal seed flowered and fell to the forest roads like a "helicopter' s blade" Being a forest borne seed, it was collected by local tribal groups and was processed on their home stove for various products from cooking oil to skin ointments. It was from this where the discovery of Sal butter extraction started.

Not to far behind came the Mango Tree. This was not the mango known as the king of fruits, but was the Forest Mango (Desi Aamm). This was found to have less pulp more seed. The pulp in typical tribal culture would be dried with enough moisture to stretch it into long rectangular strips and till today is enjoyed as a Sweet. The shell is dried to crack open and remove the kernel, is where we derive our mango butter. The cracked shell is further processed for the pickles & spice industry.

We now move towards the western coast of India, the Kokan Belt and into Goa. This entire stretch runs parallel to the Arabian Sea and has small pockets of backwaters. It is here where the Kokum fruit was discovered. The pulp is sued to make juices, which have a cooling effect on the digestive system. The outer shell is grinded & used as a souring agent in Indian curries. The seed has a skin type coating, which is high in moisture, and after thoroughly dried can you extract the seed. This property of this butter is compared to that of Shea & Lllipe.

Sustainability

Its here to stay…

We believe in relationships and create ventures, which shall not only cater within the economics of a business but also to cater to social well being of the society.

With the daily demands of high end products such as Chocolates & Personal care increasing, the seed collection processes are crucial.

The forest & tribal ministry is meeting demands of the industry by keeping a minimum price bands on sal seed. This has resulted in recording breaking collections of the seed.

The future looks bright as the herbal & pharmaceutical industry in India as well as overseas are seeking the variants of these tree borne seeds a part of their formula's. This particularly applies to the kokum fruit.
